Item description
SAFLAX - Organic - Thyme - 800 seeds - With potting substrate for better cultivation - Thymus vulgaris
Even the name promises warmth, sun and an intense aroma
With germfree and permeable potting substrate based on coconut fiber for suceessful cultivation.
Thyme is a perennial and low growing spice, aromatic and medicinal plant that reaches a growing height of not more than 40 cm. Its leaves reveal an intense aromatic aroma when crushed, and during flowering period between May and October it shows mauve flowers. When cultivated as pot plant you should use a tall potting container, as Thyme develops deep reaching tap roots.
In the kitchen: Thyme is a classic Mediterranean spice. Its not really important, whether you use it fresh cut or dried for preparing dishes since the aroma of the Thyme leaves gets even more intense and becomes up to three times as strong when dried. Particularly meat becomes significantly more aromatic with the bittersweet and pleasantly spicy flavour of Thyme. However, also vegetarian dishes, such as fried potatoes or potato gratin, can be refined quite nicely, as can a tarte flambee that is covered with thin slices of apple, goat cheese and Thyme twigs instead of bacon and onions. Last not least, Thyme is also well-suited for green salad and - of course - baked feta cheese wrapped in tinfoil. Another tasty idea are sweet desserts with Thyme. Aside from citrus fruits, like oranges and lemons, also apples, peaches and figs go very well together with Thyme. Other than many herbs and spices, Thyme is not as much affected by the cooking heat and can be added everytime during preparation.
Natural Location: Thyme comes originally from the western European Mediterranean.
Cultivation: The best time for propagation is starting in February at a sunny place indoors as the seed is a light germinator. Scatter the seeds onto moist coconut substrate or organic herbal soil and slightly press them on. Cover the seed container with clear film to prevent the soil from drying out, but dont forget to make some holes in the clear film and take it every second or third day completely off for about 2 hours. That way you avoid mold formation on the potting compost. Place the seed container somewhere bright and warm with a temperature between 20C and 25 Celsius and keep the surface of the earth moist, but not wet (ideally using a water sprayer). Depending on the propagation temperature the first seedlings will come up after two to five weeks. Seedlings that are already raised indoors can be planted out with beginning of May. As soon as there is no more night frost expected, you can move the seedling with its complete root ball, to avoid stress for the plant.
Place: The plant needs the sun, warmth and a wind-sheltered place to produce its full aroma.
Care: Keep the soil always moist, but not wet. Water your plant as soon as the top layer of the earth has dried out. Fertilize the plant either very modest with compost or organic fertilizer for herbs, or dont fertilize at all.
During Winter: During winter the root area of the plant should be protected. New shoots will develop from the lignified parts in the following year. We recommend to trim the plant all the way down to the lignified parts in spring, as this will boost budding of the new shoots.
