Our gaze finds a haven in the gorgeous colors of this picture of Mary as our protector. Even the gold still glints on her beautiful blue mantle. This one was done by our favorite holy card company, Bouasse-Lebel of Paris, we think about 1875. It is done in that ink-rich process of lithography which gives us those splendid colors, and so generously that even a large print still carries the same charm as the original. For us, this color process is like Technicolor films, another medium that has colors we love. Oh, yes, and we love the patterns too! We think you'll find this a restful meditation on Our Mother, protecting us now as always. On the back of the original is some of that florid love poetry that the Victorian age wrote for Mary which annoys our Protestant brethren. But it is beautiful, and if we are to imitate Jesus, is this not how he feels about his dear Mother? Therefore, is this not how we should feel about her? In any case, it is good to acknowledge her exalted position in Heaven and her ability to protect us, even for small things like making a happier wedding reception.
